Based on swissuniversities‘ Swiss National Strategy on Open Access, the Consortium concluded the first transformative Open Access agreement (Read & Publish) with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2019. Also in 2019, the first Gold Open Access agreement was concluded with Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). As part of swissuniversities’ action plan to implement the Open Access strategy, the Consortium is responsible for organising and providing technical support for the Big Deals negotiations with the three major publishers Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley. An agreement was reached with the three publishers and transformative Open Access contracts were concluded in 2020 and 2021 for all swissuniversities members and other institutions in Switzerland and Liechtenstein that have mandated swissuniversities to negotiate on their behalf. In addition, the Consortium is responsible for the organisation and technical support of the follow-up negotiations with the three major publishers.

In parallel, the Consortium continues to negotiate with other publishers to conclude transformative Open Access contracts, thus supporting the achievement of the 100% Open Access target by 2024.
